Project Reveal: NOPA

This historic San Francisco home was oozing with charm and original details, but it was time to give the bathrooms an update. We thoughtfully designed two distinct bathrooms that bring a fresh perspective while also honoring pretty original details like the crown moldings and doors.

First up is the primary bathroom, where the goal was to create a light + bright space that feels like a luxury spa. Take a peek at where we started.

While the space is small, it has impressive 10' ceilings. The glossy white tile bounces light around the room making it feel brighter and bigger, and the shower area feels grander with the tile carried all the way up the wall. The double arm sconce and higher glass surround also help fill the empty vertical space. By reducing the width of the back shower wall and playing up the ceiling height, we made the room feel much more spacious.

To further add to the luxury spa feel we used mixed metals, added the tile to the tub skirt, and designed a custom white oak vanity to warm up the space.

Over in the guest bathroom, our goal was to transform the half bath into a full bath by relocating the washer and dryer to a hall closet. The relocation was anything but an easy feat, given that this is a historic building and is right up against the neighboring buildings. But it was so worth it in the end, the half to full bath conversion adds value to their home and it's a game changer for busy mornings getting ready for work and school.

Our clients wanted the guest bathroom to be neutral with some blue elements, and they wanted a "wow" moment. We chose an interesting layout for the tile and hung a pendant over the vanity for an unexpected element that plays up the tall ceilings.

Can you believe a washer and dryer used to be there?

We used the same mixed metals and also incorporated the herringbone tile pattern into the guest bathroom so that both bathrooms speak to each other, while being distinct. Now the bathroom feels more like a bathroom, and the washer and dryer have their own home down the hall.

The half bath transformation is as functional as it is beautiful, and we bet they're going to be even happier that they have a second full bath as their daughter approaches her pre teen years!
